For the ancient Celtic and Druid peoples, Imbolc is personified in the form of the goddess Brigid: Goddess of Light and Illumination. Accordingly to lore, she descends to earth in her maiden form as the sun and spreads her green cloak across the earth, to which awakens the earth from winter slumber. The first appearance of green shoots and buds promise a plentiful season.
According to Danielle Olson: “So to ensure fertility and abundance in the coming spring, offerings were made for Brigid. Bonfires were set, blazing hearths and candles were lit to strengthen her powers, and bread, cakes, custard pies, cheeses and drink made with magical ingredients associated with the sun (such as egg yolk, butter and honey) were served for the Imbolc Feast.”
2022 has given me a fresh start, a personal sense of renewal and the curiosity to challenge myself with baking. This cake is one of many that I will be attempting and incorporating into feasting rituals. My witchy explorations have taken me to the forest, and now I will be attempting some adventures in the kitchen! Stay tuned….
