Have you ever celebrated Distaff or Roc Day? If you haven’t, today January 7th is the day to do so! Calling all spinners, weavers, sewers and anyone magical!!
The distaff, or roc, used in spinning was the medieval symbol of women’s work. In many European cultural traditions, women resumed their household work after the twelve days of Christmas. Women of all classes would spend their evenings spinning on the wheel.
This day celebrates the distaff and what it symbolized during medieval times, namely the efforts and work of women in textile to society. But this can extend beyond, as weaving and spinning do not necessarily just belong to textiles. Stories, messages, folklore, astronomy and astrology can all be metaphorically sewn or woven.
Use today’s magic while crafting, creating, sewing, spinning, weaving, embroidery or crochet and macrame work. Distaff Day is not limited to only textile magic. Partake in a ritual, sew, or stich with intention to every pull of the needle. Manifest. Use this day to honor the work of women throughout history. Enjoy the creative and magical energy of today!!
